Absent but Present: Voices from the Writer’s Block

Absent but Present is a collection of poetry from the members of Writer’s Block, a poetry workshop that has been meeting every Wednesday evening since 2011 at Macomb Correctional Facility, near Detroit, MI.

Through the transformative power of poetry, each one of the voices represented in this book has gained access to the incredible reserve of creativity and power, of previously unexamined emotions, that we’ve used to reshape our lives.
—from the introduction by Writer’s Block member Steven Hibbler

These poems are the finer things of revolution. Like taking the notepad away from the voice on your right shoulder and giving it to the voice on your left . . . doses of truth for the reader swallowing the short pill then the long pill then the short; a new millennium Morse code of sorts.
—from the foreword by Tongo Eisen-Martin
